Alkenylation of unactivated arenes and 6-arylpurines with terminal alkynes in high yields using Cp*Co(CO)I2 as catalyst under mild conditions is described. This method shows outstanding functional group compatibility and can be applied in the design of a mitochondria-targeted imaging dye.

CuBr was found to be an efficient catalyst for the C-N cross coupling reaction of purine and diaryliodonium salts. 9-Arylpurines were synthesized in excellent yields with short reaction times (2.5 h). The method represents an alternative to the synthesis of 9-arylpurines via Cu(II) catalyzed C-N coupling reaction with arylboronic acids as arylating agents.

Using Ag2CO3 as an additive, we developed the Pd-catalyzed intermolecular C-H/C-H cross-coupling of pyridine N-oxides with five-membered heterocycles such as 1-benzyl-1,2,3-triazoles, thiophens and furans. This protocol provides an efficient and regioselective approach for the synthesis of unsymmetrical biheteroaryl molecules.
